UM Ultimate Open was in your neighbourhood!
July 29, 2006 - 360 players from 27 teams battled for the disc, to reign as champions in the Novice Men & Women, and Open category (Mix gender). Supreme!
We broke the record by organising the biggest gathering of 360 ultimate players in Malaysia after the previous record of 192 players in the Inti Ultimate Tournament in Nilai last March.
It was also the first time the teams were awarded for Spirit of the Game in Malaysia. Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play. [View Photos]

SPIRIT OF THE GAME
The Spirit Award went to HELP University College in the Open category, Catholic High School in the Women's and to ADTEC in the Men's category.

It's interesting to point out that both winners did not win any of their games, yet were awarded high spirit points by their opponents in the Group Stage.

NOVICE WOMEN'S FINALS
Dressed in bright yellow, home team UM Women played a game in good spirit against team Intec1 to clinch a 4-2 win. Intec1 fought back with a point in the dying minutes, but the home team kept their focus and their lead.
These girls showed sheer determination, which made up for the lack of experience and skill.

NOVICE MEN'S FINALS
Home team UM2 scored a 6-3 win over team UITM1 but the game was played in bad spirit. Fouls were not resolved amicably, perhaps due to lack of knowledge and experience.
Ultimate is unique because it's a Self-Refereeing sport. Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players also resolve their own disputes. Ultimate is also a Non-Contact sport.
Team UITM1 was clearly upset, and lost their yearn to play. Even with the backing of their senior players, they could not get back in the game and looked like they had given up.

OPEN FINALS
It was a close battle, right down to sudden death in 'extra time' in the Open finals between UITM and INTEC. INTEC put up a brave fight, but UITM clinched the final point to finish at 7-6 and claim the championship once again. Last March, UITM made a clean sweep of the Men's and Women's category at the Inti Ultimate Tournament in Nilai.
The timer had run out after 40 minutes and end of normal game time was announced. Game was held at 6-6 after a light shower. They had to play out the current point, and whomever won the point, won the game. Due to time constraints, caps were not called for this tournament.

Director's Notes:
A big thank you to all participants whom came from far and wide to make this tournament memorable and one which we can be proud of.
3 cheers for the organising commitee and volunteers! Hip, hip hooray x3! With your hard work and dedication, this tournament ran smoothly and according to plan.
We didn't have money to hire a weather shaman (bomoh hujan!), but we think Kuan's shirt on our tent, scared the rain away. :D (Till he took it off the tent during the Open Finals... )
Been glad to have been nominated as Tournament Director. It's been a challenge, but it was fun! - Jyn
