INTRODUCTION
We have some significant
dreams for introducing Ultimate into Malaysia
and for shaping the growth of the sport here.
We are not content to start a weekly game,
invite some friends, travel to a tournament
or two and hope for the best. No, that is not
good enough. We are committed to getting the
whole country involved with games at every
level in every district of every state in the
country. In the short time that we have been
striving for this we have seen some significant
things happen. And we will see more in the
coming months and years. My hope is that the
program here will become big enough that Malaysia
can complete at the World Championships in
a short amount of time.
More important
than Malaysia’s place in the world Ultimate
scene is the values that are part of Ultimate.
In the early stages of development we are trying
to accomplish a few key things:
-
To
promote and support the sport of Ultimate
and its players;
-
To
increase participation in the sport of
Ultimate at all levels;
-
To
uphold the Spirit of the Game, including
personal responsibility and integrity;
and
-
To
provide a framework for players to organize
and conduct competition and other activities
related to Ultimate.
These
ideas are not unique to us. In fact we borrowed
them all from the Ultimate Players Association
based in Boulder, CO. There is no sense in
re-inventing the wheel. Those guys have been
doing this for a lot longer than we have. Additionally,
there are a few values that we are intent on
holding to:
- Unity – Ultimate
is a game for all races, genders, and neighborhoods
- Integrity
and Sportsmanship – Without these key
components of the Spirit of the Game what
do we have?
- Service – We
do not exist for ourselves. Ultimate is in
its nature a grassroots game and it will
not flourish without many volunteers.
- Fun – Why
play if it’s not going to be fun.
